GHK-Cu: copper peptide studies and laboratory evidence

Sources checked: 22 October 2026.

GHK-Cu is the copper(II) complex of the three-amino-acid peptide glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine. Research on cells and experimental wounds helps explain interest in this compound. Those experiments answer different questions from a trial of a finished skincare formulation or an analysis of a research vial.

What the original experiments measured

Primary sourceExperimental material and measurementReading the result
Maquart et al., 1988Fibroblast cultures; collagen synthesis.Collagen synthesis increased without a change in cell number. A cellular response does not measure wrinkle reduction or hair growth.
Wegrowski et al., 1992Human fibroblasts in culture; glycosaminoglycans, components of the surrounding matrix. The response varied with concentration and returned towards control levels at higher concentrations. Hyaluronic acid synthesis was unchanged.
Maquart et al., 1993Implanted wound chambers in rats; collagen, proteins and other tissue components. The treated chambers accumulated more extracellular matrix. This was an animal wound model, not a human cosmetic trial.

Why a larger amount is not automatically a larger effect

The 1992 experiment found a biphasic response: stimulation increased over part of the tested concentration range and then declined. This matters when reading claims that assume a stronger formulation must produce a better result. Concentration in a culture dish cannot be converted directly into a concentration for a skin product or a human-use protocol. Absorption, formulation and exposure conditions would need separate evidence.

GHK, GHK-Cu and a finished serum

GHK names the peptide; GHK-Cu names its copper complex. A serum also contains a vehicle and other ingredients that can affect stability and delivery. The PP listing is a 50 mg lyophilised research vial. Its declared mass is neither a serum percentage nor a concentration in mg/ml. A paper about one preparation cannot establish the performance of every product carrying the same ingredient name.

Read the independent report alongside the catalogue

PP publishes Janoshik report 222315 for a tested GHK-Cu sample. The recorded purity is 99.888%; the report lists 61.49 mg GHK-Cu, comprising 52.14 mg GHK and 9.35 mg copper. These are sample measurements. The catalogue specification remains 50 mg per vial. The report’s batch field says “Not Specified”, so it does not identify a future order’s batch or establish the contents of every vial.

Questions to ask of a skin or hair claim

Look for the exact formulation, a human comparison group and a measured endpoint relevant to the claim. Collagen production in cultured cells, visible skin changes and hair counts are separate outcomes. The selected experiments above establish laboratory observations; they do not establish those consumer outcomes for the PP vial. This is a focused reading of primary sources, not a systematic review. PP materials are supplied for laboratory research only, not human or veterinary use.
