Glutathione: oral studies, biomarkers and research documentation

Sources checked: 22 October 2026.

Glutathione is a tripeptide involved in cellular redox chemistry. GSH usually refers to its reduced form; GSSG refers to the oxidised disulfide. Searches for glutathione span supplements, skin products and laboratory material. A useful comparison starts with the chemical form, formulation and outcome actually studied.

Two controlled oral studies with different findings

StudyDesignFinding
Allen and Bradley, 201140 healthy adults; randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study lasting four weeks. No significant changes in the measured oxidative-stress biomarkers or glutathione status.
Richie and colleagues, 201554 non-smoking adults; randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study lasting six months.Increases in glutathione stores in measured body compartments.

Why the results should be read together

The studies differ in duration, participants and measurements. The longer study cannot erase the shorter study’s null result, and the shorter one cannot rule out every longer-term change. Together they show why a claim must identify the specific outcome and timeframe. The 2011 trial enrolled 40 people, while 39 completed it per protocol; those are different denominators.

A biomarker is a defined measurement

Blood, red blood cells, plasma and other sampled compartments are not interchangeable. A rise in one measure of glutathione does not by itself demonstrate improved symptoms, disease prevention or longer life. A ratio such as GSH:GSSG also answers a different question from total glutathione concentration. Record the sample type, unit and analytical method before comparing two numbers.

Formulation and route matter

Both cited trials investigated oral supplementation. They do not establish the effects of an injectable product, a topical cosmetic or a laboratory vial. A label describing liposomal delivery also identifies a formulation that needs its own evidence. Shared use of the word glutathione does not establish equivalent absorption or outcomes.

Reading a research-material specification

A specification should distinguish the reduced or oxidised form, declared mass and method of identification. Purity, quantity and concentration are separate measurements: milligrams per vial cannot become milligrams per millilitre without a defined volume. An independent report describes the submitted sample and tests performed; it does not replace a clinical study or establish suitability for human use.

Current PP availability

The catalogue format is Glutathione 1,500 mg, currently unavailable. No independent glutathione report is published in our registry. It explains selected primary sources rather than providing a systematic review or treatment instructions. PP materials are intended exclusively for laboratory research.
