What GHK-Cu is

GHK-Cu is the copper(II) complex of the human tripeptide glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine (GHK). The reviews describe GHK as occurring naturally in human plasma, with reported levels declining with age, and note that it binds copper(II) with high affinity to form GHK-Cu — the copper complex that most of the research examines (Pickart, 2008).

Published reviews concentrate the GHK-Cu literature around skin and connective-tissue research: the synthesis and breakdown of collagen and glycosaminoglycans, and the activity of matrix metalloproteinases and their inhibitors, studied in cell and tissue models (Pickart, Vasquez-Soltero & Margolina, 2015). A later review re-examines the peptide against gene-expression data, describing broad modulation of gene pathways in cultured cells (Pickart & Margolina, 2018). Throughout, these are laboratory and model-system studies.

How to read this literature

Two honest caveats. First, the underlying work is predominantly in vitro and model-system research — a result in cultured cells is not evidence of an effect in a person. Second, a substantial part of the corpus originates with a single research group (Pickart and colleagues), a concentration that reviewers weigh when judging how far the findings generalise. We describe what the literature studies and make no claim about any use in humans.
